Trend of Crop Production of Kachankawal

 Kachankawal, a rural municipality which lies in the Jhapa district of Nepal. Majority of people are involved in agriculture, mostly in the crop productions like paddy, maize, wheat, Millet etc. All these crop production is declined as compared to a year ago.

As per the questionnaire as well as research clearly illustrates the declining trend of production and the possible reasons behind this.

• Workforce

Kachankawal Municipality lies on the eastern south part of Nepal and consider as a deepest land level of Nepal. This municipality is touched by the Nepal-Indo border. A lot of Indian workforce had cultivated the Maize here. Due to the lock down caused by the COVID-19 made the border sealed that's  why in comparison to the last year this  year the production rate has been fallen. It also indicates that the present farming workforce is dependent into the Indian labor.

• Garbage Soil quality 

As a calculation through SQI, the quality of soil in this place is not outstanding. The overuse of chemical fertilizer such as urea, nitrate, ammonium fertilizers are the main reasons of decrement in quality. Another reason is burning of straw, grasses in the field because while burning them, important worms inside the soil will killed, in this way they do not get chance to enhance the soil standard.

• Climate change

Climate change is the result of overall steps adopted by Humans. Climate change provide the unfavorable conditions to the crops. Gradually increased in temperature, over raining etc can harm the production. For example if the crops adapt in winter season, but increased temperature in winter don't provide favorable environment to the growing plants, in order to that it doesn't give suitable products. 

• Unnecessary pest

Pest is a harmful third party insects which totally dependent on the consuming fruits, leaves of plant, consequently, destroyed the whole plants as a result .

• Pesticides

We know we have to mitigate against the factor which fails us to grow. Similarly, farmers used to fight against the pest through the use of pesticide without considering the side effect of overuse. The chemical pesticide will kill the useful worms and also degrade the soil quality after fall on the surface of earth. 

• Hailstones

Hailstones that falls months ago destroyed the numerous maize plants, hence decreased in production because of deterioration of plant's leaves and fruits. So hailstones are the major factor for declining in production of crops.

Control measures

• Preferring organic fertilizers rather than chemical
• Encouraging the domestic labor and workforce by Government level
• Digging the garbage in spite of burning in the field
• Biological pest control is better to be adopted than pesticides
• Adding of useful worms in the field
• Promoting organic farming
• Adopting new techniques of farming
